First-year Colorado Eagles defenseman Ronnie Attard has hit the ground running with defensive action. His impact on the team has been seen both on and off the ice by many. His personality and energy fill Blue Arena, and as assistant coach Derek Army notes, his confidence is growing continuously.
“I think one, he’s an energy guy. He’s loved in the locker room,” Army said. “Early in the year, his game was coming along. He wasn’t as confident. Right now, he’s beaming with confidence, and as he should — he’s playing some great hockey.”
This confidence hasn’t come from continuously trying to do more, but from doing less. Attard has moved from many different teams and levels in hockey, and he has learned that simplicity always does more, especially for a defenseman at the speed and level of the AHL.
“I think as I’ve gone on, just learning to simplify my game and not trying to do too much,” Attard said. “Each level has really good players. So, I’m just being simple and playing to my strengths.”
These lessons were taught and learned during his time at Western Michigan University, where he credits his coaches for shaping not only how he plays, but also his perspective on the game and life beyond the ice. “They taught me the rights and wrongs about the game, on and off the ice,” Attard said. “It really transformed the human I am today.”
Over the past two seasons, Attard has experienced some uncertainty that often comes with playing for three different teams in a short span of time. Even with the constant movement, which has caused some challenges, Attard mentions that his time with the Colorado Eagles has provided a good sense of stability and community.
“Playing for Colorado, this whole organization from the top down really feels like home,” Attard said.
On the ice, that comfort with the Eagles shows. Army describes Attard as a physical, versatile defenseman who impacts the game in many ways. Whether that be through a timely hit or contributions on the power play, Attard is proving himself as a new Eagle.
“He’s physical, he makes good reads, and defensively he’s a big body with a long stick,” Army said. “He continues to work on his gaps. He’s all in.”
The personality of Attard off the ice matches his on-ice performance since he shows friendly behavior, together with high energy and strong connections to every person present in the space. Army reports that Attard establishes strong connections with his former college teammates, but his greatest strength comes from his ability to connect with people throughout his entire community.
Attard follows his path with the Eagles while he observes the advice that has led him throughout his career path, which says to maintain emotional balance and focus on his work.
