Colorado Rallies for Point in 3-2 Shootout Loss to Gulls
Nov 1, 2026
SAN DIEGO, CA. – Colorado netted a pair of goals in the final 3:25 of the contest to erase a 2-0 deficit but fell to the San Diego Gulls 3-2 in a shootout on Sunday. Eagles forwards Jayson Megna and Tristen Nielsen each posted a goal and an assist, as goalie Ilya Nabokov suffered the shootout loss, allowing two goals on 29 shots. Gulls goalie Tomas Suchanek earned his first win of the season, making 32 saves on 34 shots and denying four of Colorado’s five shooters in the shootout.
The first period would see San Diego denied on the lone power play of the opening frame, as the two teams left for the intermission with the Eagles outshooting the Gulls, 12-9.
San Diego would open the scoring when forward Matthew Phillips collected a pass at the side of the crease before sweeping it home, giving the Gulls a 1-0 edge at the 5:56 mark of the second period.
The lead would be doubled when forward Lucas Petterson crashed through the low slot before steering a centering feed past Nabokov, putting San Diego up 2-0 with 6:26 left to play in the middle frame.
As time wound down, and with Colorado on a power play, Megna would smack a rebound in the crease out of midair and into the back of the net, slicing the deficit to 2-1 at the 16:35 mark of the third period.
After pulling Nabokov in favor of the extra attacker, Nielsen would pop a rebound past Suchanek, tying the game at 2-2 with 1:09 left to play in regulation.
Sudden-death overtime would not be able to determine a winner and the game shifted to a shootout. Nielsen would light the lamp for the Eagles, but Gulls forwards James Hamblin and Ryan Carpenter would each score to deliver the 3-2 victory.
Colorado finished the night going 1-for-3 on the power play and a perfect 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.
