We're down to the last few regular-season games, and if you're keeping an eye on the standings on the AHL's Playoff Primer, then you already know the details. There are a few win/loss variables involved, but that means that we're counting down the points or our "magic number" to punch a ticket to the playoffs. See below for how the points add up.
Points Explained - in layman's terms
How a team gets points:
- 2 points for every win in regulation or win in overtime
- 1 point for every overtime loss or shootout loss
- 0 points for a loss in regulation
How it gets complicated with the 8th - 10th-placed teams
- The top 7 teams in the Pacific Division will get a bid to postseason play. The first-place team in the Pacific Division will have a bye in the first round.
- Tucson is currently in 8th place (the first team outside the playoff picture in the Pacific Division), and they could still feasibly obtain enough points to close the gap between us.
- At this point in this season, neither the 9th nor the 10th-placed teams can obtain enough points to catch the Eagles, but that doesn't necessarily mean they are out of the playoffs yet.
- It's important to remember that both the wins and losses from our team, as well as the wins and losses of other teams, can affect our standing.
What is the magic #?
Magic # is the number of points needed by a team to clinch a playoff berth. A team's magic # is reduced when it earns standings points, or when the team with the highest possible total outside the playoff picture fails to earn standings points. A team clinches a playoff berth when its magic # reaches zero.
